Rather Thought Provoking
Was reading Mr Brown's blog just now & it was discussing about birth rates in sg. Somehow or rather, it sparked a discussion on whether the govt shld assist parents who decide to give birth to the child knowing that it would be borned 'defective'. Or would it be better to abort the unborn child if pre natal screening determines that he/she will be 'defective' either mentally or physically -_-" One of the comments suggested that govt shld only assist parents who unknowingly gave birth to defective kids whereas those who did so against all odds shld shoulder the responsibilities themselves.
Most of the comments reflected the same view as in, no matter wat, the child has the right to live. No-one shld take dat rite away from him/her and that whether knowingly or unknowingly, society shld still lend a hand. The minority (i tink 2 only?) felt dat its better to abort the child if pre natal screening shows that the kid would be borned with a major mental or physical disability becos the parents would not be able to care for them forever & its actually torture for such kids to come into the world because of today's society. There would be discrimination. They would be left behind.
Abit sad to read that post with the many comments. Wondering how u guys think abt this? Whether to give birth to the defective child anot lies in the hands of the parents rite? The child cannot make any decision anyway rite? If the child is not able to make any decision on its own fate, isit rite to say dat it has the rite to live? -_-" I mean, it doesnt noe wat the heck is happening rite??? Or does it? If u r the defective child, would u wana come into this world? Does it mean dat parents who decide to go ahead really love the child & those who decide not to, dun?
Well...i belong to the minority group -_-"
I tink different cirumstances will lead one to a different choice. If one is rich, childless & nearly over the prime child-bearing age, i tink no matter wat, they will still give birth to the kid & try their best to bring them up. One who is financially tight & relatively young & healthy would probably give it a miss? Religion & personal values would play a big part.
But if im the parent of a 'defective' child, i would be reali sad to know dat my child is not welcomed becos it is deemed to be a liability. I would also worry that no-one would be able to care for him/her after i die. Very perplexing issue....
